Miracles happen - Believe in your child!

Today I stand proud to share my child’s journey,

And tell the world about it…

Today I cry with joy wiping the tears of yesterday,

And feel the strength of love…

Today I forget the horrible worries that hovered around me,

And realized the little miracle in my arms

Is the child who showed me the way…

When I held the little bundle in my hand and wondered at the stormy days ahead, I had vowed to myself to make sure I help him to his fullest potential. Today I cannot contain myself with the overwhelming joy that brims in my cup of happiness - that individuals with down syndrome are capable of achieving success like anyone else in their own capacity!

What separates them from the rest is their tenacity, their unbridled grit and determination to push boundaries even though there is struggle at every step. And finally, emerge happy and successful in their journey… #SuperheroJijo is an example of this.

Down Syndrome International stands for people with Down syndrome living healthy and meaningful lives in the community. This organisation has also been elemental in educating, motivating and guiding people to trigger the potential of the individuals with Down Syndrome, not only in developed countries but also in developing countries to spread awareness. Personally, I greatly benefit with this vision of theirs!

One of the ways they spread awareness is through an international design competition for individuals with Down Syndrome, where they are asked to design the graphics for a pair of socks. These socks are sold by them all over the world to spread awareness and in the process, prove the capabilities of such individuals. Why socks? Well, according to Down’s Syndrome Scotland’s website, it’s because chromosomes look like socks and people with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome! “Lots of Socks” is acknowledged around the world as being associated with Down syndrome.

These socks are showcased and celebrated on World Down Syndrome Day (every year on March 21st) with the hashtag #LotsofSocks.

With an immense sense of joy and pride, I am happy to share that for #LotsofSocks2020, Jijo’s design has been selected!

#SuperheroJijo made us realise something very important.

We always thought he would crawl while we walk and we have to step back, help him catch up and then move forward. But today, it’s us who are still walking while he is sprinting ahead!

This shows that if you trigger their interests in the right manner, they will surprise you. Let go of all the myths that surround them about their disabilities. All you need to do is focus on their abilities and fuel the fire within them!

I can’t thank Down Syndrome International enough for helping Jijo realise a dream. From educating me through their website to giving such opportunities that help individuals like Jijo shine, they had played a huge role in helping us guide him in the right manner.

Do take a look at their Website & Blog (where you can sign up for a lovely newsletter!)
And you can follow them on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter
